Robert "Bob" Boelens, a former mayor of Grand Rapids and husband of 67 years to previously deceased wife Marion, died on Thursday, Nov. 30. He was 92-years-old.

Boelens served as mayor from 1970 to 1971. Prior to that, he worked in the City Building and Inspections Department and served in World War II as a Marine. He also owned the Red Barn sporting goods store.

He was born Feb. 9, 1925. Surviving are his children Sheryl Boelens, Tim and Sherry Boelens, Robert and Pam Boelens, Denny and Julie Boelens and Suzanne Jewell; as well as 7 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren.

There will be a celebration of Boelen's life on Tuesday, Dec. 5 at 11 a.m. at Faith Lutheran Church, located at 2740 Fuller Avenue NE in Grand Rapids. Visitation will be held on Monday, Dec. 4 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Pederson Funeral Home, located at 127 N Monroe Street SE in Rockford. There will also be a visitation time one hour prior to the service at church.
