April 7th through April 13th is National Dog Bite Prevention Week and is an important time to remember to always ask before approaching another person's dog. Humane Society of West Michigan is sharing their "Always Ask Campaign." It's important to remember that dogs have boundaries too and some dogs want to keep their space or don't want to interact, and that's okay! The campaign surrounds respecting the dog's needs.

As well as always asking, here are some other things to know to prevent dog bites:

  1. Avoid eye contact as this can signal aggression to the dog.
  2. Side up the dog as long as the owner says it's okay. This is better than facing the dog as it mimics dog's behavior with one another and will make the dog feel safer around you.
  3. Don't ever crouch over a dog, this can be threatening to them. Squat or stand up straight and let the dog come to you. Walking straight towards a dog can also seem threatening.
  4. Don't pat the dog's head or back end when you first start petting it. If the dog is okay with you petting it, touch the dog with an open hand on its shoulder, neck or chest. Stop when the dog wants you to stop, it will let you know by changing its position.

Until April 14 all long term dogs at HSWM are fee waved! Check out the dogs included as part of the Game of Forever Homes Adoption Special!

Humane Society of West Michigan also wants to thank all of their volunteers during this National Volunteer Appreciation Week. HSWM say that volunteers are priceless to the organization and they couldn't do what they do without them.
