Taste of My Town: Simple Fish

In this week's Taste of My Town, we travel to Cutlerville for Simple Fish.

CUTLERVILLE, Mich. — At Simple Fish in Cutlerville, you don't have to love raw fish to love sushi -- with offerings ranging from the adventurous to the tame, there is likely something for every palette. We checked it out for this week's Taste of My Town.

From blow torched finishing touches, to poke bowls, Simple Fish is bringing something special to the local sushi scene, including a sushi burrito. Yes, that's right.

"I always get the same thing, the sushi burrito with shrimp tempura," said a visitor. "It really is like a burrito but full of sushi," she explained.

"It's more of a modern twist on sushi," said co-owner Andrew Ly. "Instead of using just the half sheet you use a full sheet of the seaweed, it's called nori. You kind of just put everything inside fold it into a big burrito sized sushi roll and you cut it in 2 and just eat it like a burrito," he explained.

Andrew and Chef David agree, excellent sushi must have the perfect balance of rice, really fresh fish, and veggies. "Really you just need all of it to have good sushi," said Andrew. "The chef has been working on recipes for like ten years now," explained Andrew.

"I love the Killer Shrimp roll, the California is always a good one, you can't ever go wrong," said another diner.

In addition to sushi classics, "We started bringing in a new twist with poke bowls. It's a Hawaiian cuisine, so it's a bowl with sushi vinegar rice and there is generally raw fish on top. But we mix it up with Japanese vegetables, so it gives it a new little twist," said Andrew.

Diners also love the peaceful atmosphere. A beautiful hand-painted mural is definitely the focal point. "You can come in here and study if you want to but also catch a bite, it's really good," said a visitor. "The atmosphere is really cool, it's hip and modern, the food it to die for," said another.

And if you are looking for a unique sweet treat you won't be disappointed. They serve several flavors of bubble teas as well.

Simple Fish is open Monday-Saturday. Check out their menu and their hours here.
