Spa-like birthing rooms part of Mercy Health's new Birth Center

There are also new lighting controls, sound machines and new therapies to help mom through labor.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Mercy Health has expanded its Birthing Center at St. Mary's to include a spa-like atmosphere for new moms.

The new rooms include a larger space to accommodate more family and visitors. And medical equipment is kept at a minimum.

There are also new lighting controls, sound machines and new therapies to help mom through labor.

And Susan Bankhead, the Clinical Services Director for the new center says that’s not all, “We have a soaker tub and also come jet showers so moms can sit in the showers. It's truly like a massage shower. So moms that we know from the past have had back labor they can use that as their therapy for pain in managing their labor."

The first phase of Mercy Health's new Birthing Center at St. Mary's is already in use with the second phase expected to open soon.
