Medication Assisted Treatment helps some recover from opioid addiction

Daley Petrak and her addiction specialist joined the 13 ON YOU SIDE Weekend Morning team to share a treatment that's helping Daley to recover.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- The opioid addiction problem in our country has become an epidemic. The drug has torn families apart and taken many lives due to overdose. Fighting the addiction is difficult but it can be done.

In May we introduced you to Daley Petrak who is in recovery from opioid addiction.

She joined the 13 ON YOUR SIDE Weekend Morning team with her addiction specialist Dr. Sandy Dettmann to talk about a medication-assisted treatment that is helping many former addicts on their road to recovery. It's called Suboxone.

Dr. Dettmann explained that Suboxone helps addicts overcome the symptoms of addiction and continue the hard work of recovery. She recommends counseling, support groups and the 12 Steps Program. She says a sense of community is so important for addicts as they recover.

Daley's goal of sharing her story is give those struggling with addiction, and those who love them, hope that they can overcome opioid addiction.
