West Michigan crossfit gyms honor Memorial Day with workouts

Every year crossfit gums an workout enthusiast gather to pay tribute to Memorial Day in their own way.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - There is no limit to the different ways that someone could pay tribute on Memorial Day, and crossfit gyms all over West Michigan are showing just that.

Every year, crossfit gyms and workout enthusiast gather together to show their respect, and in their own way. On Memorial Day, a number of gyms have members complete workouts known as "hero wod's." Each wod is named after a fallen soldier.

The most well-known wod is "Murph" named after the U.S. Navy Seal Officer Michael Murphy. He was awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions during the War in Afghanistan.

The Murph wod is made up of a 1 mile run, followed by 100 pulls ups, 200 push ups, 300 air squats and then finished with another 1 mile run. If a participant chooses to complete the workout as prescribed, they would also need to wear a 20 pound weighted vest.

Gyms all over West Michigan, including Luminary in Grand Rapids, took on the challenge. Their Murph wod took place at 9 a.m. on Monday and concluded with a special Memorial Day brunch.
