Are the going out of business sales any good?

Prices are set by the liquidators, not Younkers.

There are two major retailers closing here in West Michigan: Toys R Us and Younkers. Both are holding going out of business sales and 13 ON YOUR SIDE wanted to find out if they were worth checking out.

At Rivertown Mall, most of the signs were for 50 percent off. Diane Gohlke said she got a deal. “I got a swimsuit for $33. It was 50 percent off.”

There’s still a lot of inventory, but how good are the rest of the deals?

Consumer Reporter Sarah Sell said they aren’t much better than Younkers regular sales. Phyllis Neitzel agrees. “I don’t think it’s real reasonable yet. I do think some of it is, but it’s still cheaper when I use my rewards or a coupon.”

Sales on other items, like purses, were minimal, coming in at 25 percent off. Over in shoes, 40 percent off. Prices are set by the liquidators, not Younkers. Coupons and rewards cannot be used and all sales are final.

Over at Toys R Us on Alpine Avenue, the going out of business sale is further along. The inventory is low and most items are 50 percent off. Don't bother looking for hot items like Legos, because they're gone.

Back at Younkers, the sales will likely get a better as time goes on. They still have a loyal customer base eager to shop there. “I like Younkers, so I will keep coming back. I didn't buy anything this time," said Neitzel.
