Try It Before You Buy It: DeskCycle Ellipse

We test out an under-desk elliptical machine to see if it’s worth your money.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Do you want to sit around and ride a bike but not ride a bike?

Looking for another way to exercise in the comfort of your own home?

The DeskCycle, promises you can get healthy just sitting around whenever your legs are free. But does it?

Let's Try It Before You Buy It!

The DeskCycle costs around $239. It is big and heavy. After opening the box, you'll need to do some light assembly, such as putting on the pedals and attaching the display. We noticed right away that it is well made and seems high quality.

First up, we decided to test it out in a typical office environment. We placed it under the desk and immediately realized this thing was heavy, and because of this weight, it made it hard to position. Once in position, though, we relocated the meter to the top of the desk. This made it easier to see our progress. The pedaling was smooth but felt awkward at the angle we were sitting at.

We then went around the office and tested it with different leg lengths and desks. For our tester over six feet tall, his legs would just hit the top of the desk. One of the producers, who is 5 "2', loved it and said it worked great but was not worth the price ($239). The other testers said it worked but only seemed to focus on the calves and not any other part of their legs. And our last stop said it felt like a good workout but didn't fit right under their desk.

We did test it while sitting on a couch, it worked well, but we could see how it could get uncomfortable if you have a deep sofa since it depends on how you are sitting and the depth of the couch.

So the results:

The positives:

  • Friendly and smooth, and easy to adjust pedaling
  • Accurate and relocatable meter
  • Very sturdy

The Negatives:

  • Very hit or miss with body and location
  • Heavy and hard to move
  • Almost too big for under a desk

The DeskCycle is one of the nicest under desk pedals we have seen. It's very smooth with its pedaling. But with it being so hit or miss with body types and the locations where it works, we rate this as a "consider it." It was almost an avoid it, but when it works, it works well.
