Millennials are feeling the reach of the nation's opioid crisis.
Forty-two percent of millennials personally know someone who has dealt with an opioid addiction, according to a new poll by NBC News/GenForward.
White millennials were most likely to be touched by the epidemic, according to the survey, with 54% saying they they knew someone who has dealt with an opioid addiction. More specifically, 57% of white female millennials said they knew someone involved with addiction, compared with 51% of white males.
Meanwhile, 30% of African-American millennials, 26% of Asian-American millennials and 23% of Latino millennials said they know someone who has struggled with opioid addiction.
Last year, a Pew Research Center survey reported that 46% adults surveyed have a member of a close friend who is addicted to drugs or was in the past. That survey included a wide range of drugs.
The NBC/GenForward survey focused specifically on opioids, which means certain pain killers and also heroin.
GenForward is a University of Chicago project that conducts bimonthly surveys of millennials across the nation. The NBC News/Gen/Forward survey was conducted May 17 to June 3.
