Toddlers and teenagers compete in Rockford Kids Triathlon

Hundreds of young athletes between ages 2 and 17 participated in the Rockford Kids Triathlon on Saturday to benefit Special Olympics Michigan.

ROCKFORD, Mich.- The rain held off and the only ones who got wet were the swimmers at Saturday’s Rockford Area Kids Triathlon.

Hundreds of young athletes ages 2 through 17 entered the competition this year at Rockford High School. The event is organized by local law enforcement and first responders to benefit Special Olympics Michigan. The triathletes run, bike and swim for trophies.

“It is such a fun environment,” says parent Danielle Crow. “Really appreciate getting the kids out and really involved in something out of their comfort zone.”

“I just like the sports,” adds her 7-year-old son Simon. “My favorite part here is the biking. I don't use as much energy.”

13 ON YOUR SIDE Anchor and Special Olympics Michigan board chair Juliet Dragos helped distribute the trophies medals and certificates. The triathlon is part of the Law Enforcement Torch Run campaign to raise money to support Special Olympics programs and activities. Organizers say it also leads to better relations between police and the community and physical fitness for children.

“It is all about the kids,” says Michigan State Policed F/Lt. Kevin Sweeney. “Showing them about sportsmanship, giving them a chance to improve self-esteem and do something that is really quite challenging.”
