Cameras capture moments before, after Muskegon mother of 3 was fatally beat

A man admitted to police he cut and beat his former girlfriend, who later died of her injuries.

Muskegon police were dispatched to a home just after 7:15 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 4, near Irwin Avenue and Jiroch Street, upon a report of a caller saying his girlfriend was attacked, according to a news release.

Upon arrival, police found the 22-year-old woman with cuts to her throat and blunt force trauma to her head. Friends speaking with WZZM 13's Jon Mills later identified her as Barbara Dailey, a mother of three.

She was to an area hospital for treatment, where she died from her injuries.

Dailey's former boyfriend, a 29-year-old male identified by friends and neighbors as Joshua Salyers, was also on the scene and eventually told police he caused the injuries.

Neighbor Kevin Sander has cameras on every corner of his home, and video captured Salyers entering Dailey's home with her. Police now are reviewing the images.

Sander says the video shows Salyers leaving Dailey's house by the back alley, then running around the block and returning to the front of the house.

A friend of Dailey, Doug Carlson, said she brought so much kindness to the neighborhood. Friends of her knew Salyers recently was kicked out of her home.

"She had a bad relationship with a bad dude, and he is not allowed here," Carlson said. "Two nights ago, he came by my house and asked if he could visit her, and I told him, 'No.'"

Carlson thinks Salyers might have taken advantage of an opportunity as Dailey was home alone when other neighbors and friends were at a picnic. She didn't attend the event, rather, she stayed home to rest, Carlson said.

Salyers is being held at Muskegon County Jail. Jail records show he is charged with murder and is expected to be arraigned Tuesday, Sept. 6.

An investigation now underway by Muskegon police to determine what led up to the attack. Anyone with additional information about this case is encouraged to call the Muskegon Police Department at 231-724-6750 or Silent Observer at 231-722-7463.
