Family dispute leads to drive-by shooting

No one was hurt, but two men are under arrest.

Two men have been charged for their involvement in a drive-by shooting in Howard City.

Kody Gene Rankin, 23, is facing three charges of discharging a firearm from a vehicle and four other felony charges in connection with the drive-by shooting. He is currently being held at the Montcalm County jail on a $500,000 bond. 

Jeramy Clinton Slagel, 23, was also charged in connection with the shooting. He is facing three charges including discharging a firearm from a vehicle, discharging a firearm at or at a building and felony firearm. He is currently at the Montcalm County Jail on a $250,000 bond. 

Deputies were called to a home in the 18000 block of W. Church Road around 1:25 a.m. on Dec. 28

A 37-year-old homeowner was outside and was not hurt during the drive-by shooting. Two other people inside the home at the time were also not hurt.

While deputies were investigating, the suspect returned. Deputies chased him but could not catch him.

Around 2:53 a.m., deputies were called to a home in the 8000 block of N. Federal Road. They believe Rankin returned home and argued with his wife. When they arrived, he ran into nearby woods.

Michigan State Police troopers joined in the search for the suspect.

One of the suspects was found and arrested near Orton and Cherry Streets.

A nearby home was also searched, where they found Slagel. 

A house, vehicle and outbuilding were damaged in the shooting.

According to the Montcalm County Prosecutor's Office, both suspects will be formally charged later Friday afternoon.

The Montcalm County Emergency Medical Services also assisted.
