A grandmother accused of leaving her granddaughter in a hot car was in court Wednesday morning.

Karol Fitzgerald, 71, was arraigned on a misdemeanor charge of leaving a child in an unattended vehicle.

On May 21, a Kent County Sheriff's Deputy was dispatched to the Walmart store on Alpine Avenue.

The Deputy found a 2-year-old girl in the back seat of a running car. He says he was not able to wake the child and forced his way into the car. She then started to wake up.

The 2-year-old girl was taken to Helen DeVos Children's Hospital and treated for heat exhaustion.

The child's grandmother was found shopping inside the Walmart store.

If convicted, the Stanton woman faces up to 93 days in jail.
