Inmate captured after bolting from hospital bed in Fremont

Ian Riley-Jackson Davis was found just before 1 p.m. Tuesday.

FREMONT, Mich. - A Newaygo County inmate who bolted from a hospital on Tuesday, leading to an extensive manhunt, is back in custody after crashing a motorcycle while fleeing police, officials said.

Ian Riley-Jackson Davis, 32, fled Spectrum Health Gerber Memorial Hospital in Fremont about 8:50 a.m. while undergoing treatment for a seizure. He was arrested Friday on an auto theft charge.

Police spotted him on a motorcycle about 1 p.m. Tuesday. Davis was attempting to elude police when he crashed into an oil truck at Main Street and Mechanic Avenue, just a few blocks from where he escaped.

Davis returned to the hospital Tuesday afternoon for treatment of a leg injury; security this time was heightened.

His capture capped an extensive manhunt that got underway after Davis fled his hospital room dressed only in orange-colored jail pants. He was taken there Tuesday morning after reportedly suffering a seizure.

Police say Davis outran a sheriff's deputy and hospital staff as he made good his escape. He went to a nearby home where it is believed he got a change of clothes and the motorcycle he later crashed.

Authorities told area residents to lock their cars and homes as they searched the area.

Davis has been a wanted man for several months. The Michigan Department of Corrections in May listed him as an absconder from parole and the Newaygo County Sheriff's Department in July took to Facebook to track him down for several car thefts.

The sheriff's department posted information on its Facebook page July 18 asking the public’s help in finding Davis, saying he was wanted for multiple car thefts and resisting arrest.

Davis was arrested Friday, Aug. 10. He was arraigned Monday in Newaygo County District Court in White Cloud on charges of receiving and concealing a stolen vehicle and resisting and opposing police. Bond was set at $15,000 - 10 percent.

Davis is due back in court next week in that case. Additional charges are also pending in the Tuesday morning escape.

He was released by the Department of Corrections on Dec. 26, 2017 after serving time at a boot camp near Chelsea for break-ins that occurred in Kent County in late 2016.

In one case, he served as a “lookout’’ in a home break-in in northern Kent County. In another case, Davis entered an unattached garage in Kent City and stole items that were later recovered at a pawn shop, court records show.

A Kent County judge last year sentenced Davis to between 1½ and 15 years in prison. He was listed as a parole absconder May 17 and had been on the lam up until his arrest last week.

Davis, who lists addresses in Kent City and Newaygo, has numerous arrests over the years in multiple locations, including Grand Rapids, Muskegon and Newaygo.

Offenses include operating on a suspended/revoked license, failing to obey police and contempt of court.

Davis has not had a valid driver's license for several years. His license was suspended on prior occasions for drug and alcohol violations, according to Michigan Secretary of State records.

Driving offenses dating back to his teen years include speeding, failing to display a valid license, minor in possession of alcohol and disobeying a traffic signal.

He has several felony convictions in Kent and Newaygo counties dating back to 2005. Offenses include trying to obtain prescription medication through fraud, attempted resisting and obstructing police and resisting and obstructing a police officer.
