An Ottawa County man remains in the hospital after police say his son nearly beat him to death.

It happened on Monday morning at a home on Thornwood Drive in Georgetown Township. Police arrested the man's 34-year-old son.

Police say Bret Bardwell entered his father's home and beat him with a blunt object while his father was laying in bed.

After the attack, Bradwell's father was able to call for help from a neighbor's home. The Vietnam War veteran suffered head and facial injuries, as well as a broken wrist.

Bardwell was arrested Monday night. Police initially charged him with first degree home invasion and assault with intent to do great bodily harm. But due to the severity of the injuries and police getting additional information, they upgraded the charge to assault with intent to murder.

Police tell WZZM 13 Bardwell has no previous run-ins with police and believe the incident stemmed from a family dispute.

High school friends of Bardwell's tell us, "He was a happy-go-lucky guy. Always joking around. Couldn't even remember seeing him upset."

If convicted of the felony assault charge, the Wyoming man can face up to life in prison.

His bond was denied, he will be back in court later this month.
