Deputies: Skeletal remains located in northern Kent County

The sheriff's office confirms the remains are human.

ALPINE TOWNSHIP, Mich. - Authorities in Northern Kent County are investigating after discovering human skeletal remains in a wooded area.

They were located in the area of Gibbs Road and Stage Avenue NW, which is off of 6 Mile Road and Fruit Ridge Avenue.

The remains were discovered by a hunter on Sunday, and police have been investigating since then.

The partial skeletal remains have not been identified yet, and investigators are working to provide more answers.

"There is an operating theory that the remains have been there for a period of time. The window of time is rather wide," said Sgt. Joel Roon from the Kent County Sheriff's Office. "But we don't believe these to be any type of ancient remains."

Roon said the remains have been in the area for "several seasons." Deputies did not find any clothing with the partial skeletal remains which they say were found above ground.

"This isn't like a grave or a burial, or [they've] been there so long that they had settled into the ground. They were almost all above ground," said Roon.

Police are still looking into the possibility of foul play. Experts in East Lansing are assisting as the remains are currently being examined at MSU's School of Anthropology.

"Skeletal remains do often show signs of trauma and they will sort of hold that trauma for a long time," said Roon.
