Public forum held on Michigan Social Studies curriculum

Proposed changes are seen as controversial because because they remove references to Roe v. Wade, gay rights and climate change while trimming references to the role of the NAACP.

The state of Michigan could be changing its educational standards when it comes to social studies.

Thursday night, the Michigan Department of Education held a Listen and Learn Session about the proposed standards and what changes can and will be made.

Proposed changes are seen as controversial because because they remove references to Roe v. Wade, gay rights and climate change while trimming references to the role of the NAACP. According to our partners at The Detroit Free Press revisions also eliminate the word "democratic" from the phrase "core democratic values."

Much of the controversy has centered on Republican state Sen. Patrick Colbeck. Colbeck is also running for governor and wants to revamp Michigan's education, specifically Common Core Standards.
