Founders Brewing offers government employees discounts amid shutdown

The offer, which launched Saturday, consists of 10 percent off food items and $1 off all class one and class two pints of beer.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Saturday marked day 22 of the government shutdown, making it the longest closing in U.S. history. With hundreds of thousands of furloughed workers, Founders Brewing Company is offering government employees discounts to help offset the financial hardship.

The offer, which launched Saturday, consists of 10 percent off food items and $1 off all class one and class two pints of beer. For Founders’ promotional manager, Luke Sass, the decision to lend a helping hand was easy.

“These folks spend a lot of time making sure that we have garbage being cleaned up, trees not being chopped down. For us, it’s really cool to know that we can do a little something there to just honor the effort that they put in,” Sass said.

To be eligible for the discounted brewery rate, government employees must bring a form of employee verification, such as a pay stub, business card or identification badge.

President Trump has suggested that the government shutdown could go on for months or years further. With no end in sight, Sass says that Founders will provide the discount until the government is up and running.

“It’s all about making sure that folks understand that hard work is rewarded and that if they chase their dreams and go after something really good, people notice and they want to do something great for them,” Sass said.
