Grandville High School wrestling team disqualified from post-season

The highly-ranked Grandville High school wrestling team is disqualified from post-season competition because the state high school athletic association says the school broke the rules.

GRANDVILLE, Mich. (WZZM) -- The highly-ranked Grandville High school wrestling team is disqualified from post-season competition because the state high school athletic association says the school broke the rules.

“Grandville High School has been withdrawn from the Michigan High School Athletic Association Team Dual Wrestling Tournament as a result of exceeding the limit of regular-season days of competition during the 2015-16 season,” the organization posted on the website.

The Bulldogs wrestled in 15 matches, one more than the maximum 14 that are allowed. It is considered an unfair competitive advantage.

Grandville is the OK Red Conference Champion and is ranked #5 in the state.

And not only is the team disqualified from postseason competition, individual wresters aren't eligible to compete for weight class championships either.

“The impact on me is I’m heartbroken,” says senior wrestler Dalton Lopez. “I’ve put 7 or 8 years of blood, sweat and tears into this sport. I’ve loved every bit of it and now it’s being taken away from me.”

The school is appealing their disqualification to the Michigan High School Athletic Association.

Post season tournament competition begins Feb. 10.
