Group breaks ground on affordable housing in Ottawa County

Good Samaritan Ministries will choose the tenants for the four-unit development.

A new development is coming to an area in need of affordable housing.

Lakeshore Habitat for Humanity and Good Samaritan Ministries broke ground Thursday May 24, 2018, on a new micro-development near Zeeland. The two groups are working with Third Coast Home to create more affordable housing in the greater-Holland area.

Third Coast Homes believes these kinds of housing developments are a more effective and financially responsible approach to breaking the cycle of poverty.

"It's one of those things that you start dreaming and you start planning and you think a lot about but until it really starts to happen and you start moving the dirt you really don't know how good it feels," Don Wilkinson, with Habitat for Humanity, said.

Good Samaritan Ministries will choose the tenants for the four-unit development. They will pay no more than 30% of their income on housing costs.
