This month, medical and health experts are working hard to raise awareness about the dangers of allergies. It is estimated more than 50 million Americans suffer from either food or indoor/outdoor allergies. This time of year can bring an increased risks of having a severe or fatal reaction.

Not by coincidence, May is National Asthma and Allergy Awareness Month. It is peak season for those suffering with asthma and spring allergies. It is also a time of year where people with food allergies need to be extra careful, as well. Last week was Food Allergy Awareness Week.

Roughly 15 million Americans are living with food allergies, nearly half of them children. They are typically the most vulnerable. With summer camps, holidays, picnics and change in daily routine that is common during summer months, it is important now to reinforce the need to be vigilant.

About 40% of children with food allergies have suffered a potentially life-threatening reaction. Every 3 minutes a food allergy sends someone to the emergency room. Experts say the key to safety is avoiding triggers.

Parents are encouraged to review safety protocols with their own kids and anyone who anyone who will be caring for their children. Those protocols include, reading labels, not sharing food or eating anything without labels, washing hands and carrying an Epi-pen if needed.

A few tips for reducing risk include showering at night to remove pollen from your hair, paying attention to air quality and limiting outdoor exposure when conditions aren't favorable. People with asthma should always carry an inhaler, if needed.

Asthma attacks can be triggered by the pollen and grass particles many are exposed to right now.

Each day, 10 people in this country die from an asthma attack. That's about 3,600 deaths a year. Like with all allergies, the best way to manage it is to avoid triggers, take medication to prevent symptoms and seek medical attention immediately when needed.
