GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Here is the latest information on the coronavirus in Michigan, including the number of cases state offices report and other updates affecting West Michigan.

Tuesday's cases

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services reported 669 daily cases of COVID-19; there are now 79,176 total cases.

The state reported 16 deaths on Tuesday, but 11 of those came from a review of death certificate data. The death toll has reached 6,170.

See cumulative data here.

The latest data on recoveries is from Friday, July 24. It shows that 57,502 people have recovered from the virus. The state updates this data every Saturday. A recovery is counted as anyone who is 30 days out from the onset of their symptoms.

Hospitalizations are fluctuating. There are 442 COVID-19 patients in Michigan hospitals, 135 on ventilators, and 211 in critical care as of July 28.

Michigan is reporting the number of cases at long term care facilities. That data can be seen here.

Whitmer opposes making schools offer in-person classes

Gov. Gretchen Whitmer is unreceptive to Republican-passed legislation that would require public schools to offer in-person instruction to students in kindergarten through fifth grade amid the coronavirus pandemic.

The Democratic governor’s comments Tuesday came after several districts recently announced they will start the academic year solely with distance learning regardless of whether Whitmer moves the rest of Michigan into phase five of her reopening plan.

The governor says parts of the House-approved plan now pending in the Senate have “merit,” but “other pieces are modeled after the DeVos plan to force schools to put kids back in the classroom."

The death toll increased by five; the state reports 6,154 cumulative deaths.
