New COVID-19 variant may affect herd immunity

Medical experts say state should aim for 90% vaccinated.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Now that the COVID-19 variant has made it's way to Michigan, state health officials say herd immunity may need to increase from a goal of 70% to 90%.

But with only 5% of the state's population vaccinated that goal may be a long way off. 

Dr. James Grant, Chief Medical Officer for Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan talks about how getting vaccinated is more important now more than ever.
