GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — The hospitality group behind a number of Grand Rapids hotels says it will be consolidating all hotel service to the Amway Grand Plaza starting Wednesday.

AHC Hospitality announced that JW Marriott Grand Rapids will suspend operations starting April 1. AC Hotel Grand Rapids Downtown and Courtyard by Marriott Grand Rapids Downtown have both been closed since March 25.

“We are working through plans to adjust staff to appropriate levels,” said Rick Winn, President AHC Hospitality.

The hospitality group says about 1,000 employees will be furloughed due to the consolidation of hotel service. Employees who were already enrolled will continue receiving medical coverage.

“We will lean on our managers and remaining staff that can help provide cross-functional services to support the limited needs at the consolidated hotel, while ensuring all COVID-19 guidelines for guest and staff safety remain in place,” said Winn.

The JW Marriott joins a growing list of businesses closing their doors amid the pandemic. Many businesses were forced to close under Gov. Whitmer's stay at home order.

The order suspends unnecessary in-person operations and bans all public and private gatherings of any number of people not already living together in the same household.  If anyone does leave their house for essential functions or jobs, they are asked to adhere to social distancing measures including remaining six feet apart from each other.
