Learn how to spot and prevent sepsis with Dr. Stephen Fitch

Sepsis is the third-leading cause of death in the U.S.

Few people know that with more than 258,000 lives being lost per year, sepsis ranks as the third-leading cause of death in the U.S. (after heart disease and cancer). Sepsis is your body’s toxic, or severe, response to an infection. News reports on this condition have increased and sepsis is being mentioned more often in movies and on TV. However, there still is a lot of misinformation, including the incorrect idea that sepsis is rare.

Dr. Stephen Fitch, a critical care pulmonologist at Spectrum Health Medical Center, stopped by to talk about this condition, how fast it can progress and what you can do to prevent it.
