Happy National Running Day! Here's some advice when starting a new routine

Here are some helpful tips to consider when starting a running routine.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Happy National Running Day! If you are someone who hasn't ever been in a running routine, but wants to start -- we have some tips for you!

First of all, never forget to stretch and warm up. Stationary stretches are important, but so are dynamic stretches. This helps prevent injury and makes it easier for your body to do things properly! For some examples of stretches for runners click here.

Changing a routine is hard, but doable. Going in with a plan is always helpful. Creating healthy, purposeful habits are important. Maybe laying out your gear the night before will help you, or blocking out specific dates and times to go on your run. Figure out what works best for you and your lifestyle and make it happen! Lastly, there are plenty of things to keep in mind when thinking about the actual running portion of a running routine.

For instance, don't expect to run your goal distance right away. It might be helpful to start by running in intervals. Possibly, run one minute, walk two. Keep increasing the amount of time you run and decreasing the amount of time you walk. Eventually you'll hit your goal.

Never forget to listen to your body -- everyone is different! Some days are better than others, so don't be too hard on yourself!
