Spectrum Health announces new president, CEO

Spectrum Heath is introducing the health care system's next president and CEO to succeed Richard C. Breon, who is retiring in 2018.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Tuesday morning the Spectrum Health System Board of Directors will announce their new president and CEO.

The Grand Rapids-based health care system announced at an 11 a.m. press conference that Tina Freese-Decker has been appointed as the new president and CEO.

Freese-Decker will replace Rick Breon, who announced back in October that he expects to retire by the end of 2018. Breon has led Spectrum since 2000. Freese Decker will take over Sept. 1.

"I am honored and thrilled to serve as President and CEO of Spectrum Health," said Tina Freese Decker. "Spectrum Health is a well-respected leader in our industry. I look forward to implementing new and innovative ways of meeting individuals where they are on their health journey to further advance their health and well-being."

"I am very proud to work with such a talented group of physicians, clinicians, team members and partners who truly set Spectrum Health apart and dedicate their careers to our mission."

Freese-Decker was hired into Spectrum in 2002 and currently serves as executive vice president and chief operating officer. An active member of the community, Freese Decker currently serves on the Board of Directors of the YMCA of Greater Grand Rapids, Fifth Third Bank Western Michigan, Michigan Health and Hospital Association, Michigan State University and Spectrum Health Alliance and The Economic Club of Grand Rapids.

She was formerly the Michigan and NW Ohio Regent for the American College of Healthcare Executives. She earned master’s degrees in health administration and industrial engineering from the University of Iowa and a bachelor’s degree from Iowa State University. The mother of 2 lives in Cascade Township.

Spectrum is West Michigan's largest job provider, with 26,000 employees, 12 hospitals and a network of 3,600 physicians. There are hospitals and medical facilities all over the region spanning from Ludington to Reed City and Wayland to Hastings.
