Spectrum Health hosts community picnic for DNA registry program

Spectrum Health and the National Institutes of Health have come together on a new research program that individualizes health care.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Health care if often considered a one-size-fits-all, but Spectrum Health has joined forces with the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to tailor health care specific to someone's genetic makeup.

Together, Spectrum and the NIH are working to create the largest health data resource to help doctors better understand a person's health, neighborhood, family history and lifestyle in order to develop new medical treatment unique to each person.

The program is called All of Us and is run by the NIH. People are of all races, ethnicity, sex, gender, and sexual orientation are encourage to participate and register their DNA for research purposes.

On Saturday, July 14, Spectrum hosted a free outdoor community picnic at the Salvation Army KROC Center on Divsion Avenue in Grand Rapids from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. There, participants could see fun, educational demonstrations including how DNA is extracted from a strawberry.

Community members could also participate in an ArtPrize entry, finger paint, visit wellness organizations at the picnic, take selfies and enter giveaways.
