State suspends Norton Shores nurse's licence for 'dangerous prescribing behavior'

The Dept. of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs has suspended a Norton Shores nurse's license for negligence at her practice.

The State of Michigan has suspended the license of a nurse in Norton Shores.

According to a release from the Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs (LARA), Susan Drust's license was suspect for allegations of negligence and failure to exercise due care at her practice -- calling her prescribing behavior "dangerous."

LARA officials say Drust prescribed controlled substances to patients who abused alcohol. LARA also alleges that Drust prescribed unsafe drug combinations without documenting the risk or rationale, failed to document "problematic" urine drug screens and did not document consideration for other treatments that didn't involve opioids.

“The allegations against the licensee indicate that she put public health and safety at risk,” said Director Orlene Hawks. “Based on our findings, it was crucial for LARA to summarily suspend this licensee to protect patients in Michigan.”

A summary suspension is temporary that LARA implements to protect the public, but not a final determination of whether Drust violated Public Health Code.

Drust operated a practice called Susan Drust Family Medicine in Norton Shores.
