Are some Michigan lighthouses haunted?

The author of "Michigan's Haunted Lighthouses" has investigated dozens of rumors and reports of paranormal activity at Great Lakes lighthouses in Michigan.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Michigan lighthouses are safety lanterns, landmarks and, some believe, also haunted by ghosts.  At least some of them.

“I do believe that,” says Brenda Thomas. “I do believe there are spirits.”

Thursday night the author of a book on the subject was sharing ghost stories with a crowd at the Grand Rapids Public Library.

To research her book "Michigan's Haunted Lighthouses" author and historian Dianna Higgs Stampfler says she has investigated dozens of rumors and reports about paranormal activity.  She says she has had several hair-raising experiences, but never an encounter with an actual ghost.

“You know, I have never seen a million dollars,” she points out. “It doesn't mean it doesn't exist. So just because I haven’t seen a ghost at these lights doesn't mean they don't exist.”

The printing of her book is almost sold out, but Stampfler says she is presenting over 50 lectures on the subject around the state between now and Halloween.

People can hear her stories and share theirs.

“She gives both sides,” says Theresa Waller, who was in the audience Thursday night.  “There are some skeptics and there are some believers. I’m a little more skeptical but I would like to see something. I think people want to know what happens when we die.”
