Ice thickening on area lakes brings out ice fishers

The recent frigid weather has lasted long enough for ice to form on shallow bodies of water.

EAST GRAND RAPIDS, Michigan — Reeds Lake seemed to awake from a long winter's nap as the sunshine beamed down on Monday.

In stead of boaters and bathers, it was the sound of motorized augers that broke the calm, frozen waters.

Ice fishermen have started to set up camp now that the ice has gotten a little thicker.

But with warmer weather and rain on the way, the newly formed ice will weaken just as quickly as it formed.

Before you venture out, consider these tips about ice:

  • The strongest ice is usually clear and relatively smooth.
  • A jagged and cloudy surface usually indicates weak ice.

Follow these guidelines for weight vs. ice thickness:

  • 2" or less = keep off, it's too thin
  • 4" = can support an adult
  • 5" - 6" = snowmobiles
  • 8" - 12" = cars
  • !2" - 15" = medium trucks
