Kroc Center holds free 'world's largest swim lesson' on Thursday

The Salvation Army Ray and Joan Kroc Center is working to improve water safety in West Michigan. Thursday, it will hold the 'World's Largest Swim Lesson.'

GRAND RAPIDS - This time of year many people are eager to take a dip in the pool or visit the beach. Water activities and summer weather go hand-in-hand.

But, drowning continue to be among the highest ranking causes of accidental death. Each day, in this country, 10 people drown in water accidents. Studies show when children have formal swimming lessons, it can reduce the likelihood of drowning by 88%.

The Salvation Army Ray and Joan Kroc Center is working to improve water safety in West Michigan. Thursday, it will hold the 'World's Largest Swim Lesson.'

The Kroc Center partnered with United Healthcare Community Plan to offer the free water safety class. The event is for people of all ages and aims to improve swimming skills and comfort in the water.

Registration for the event is free for everyone, but space is limited — visit GRKrocCenter.org and click the banner on the home page to sign up. All kids under 12 must be accompanied by an adult;
