14 year old killed in U.S. 131 crash near Fifth Third Ballpark

A preliminary investigation revealed a northbound vehicle rear ended a van, pushing it into the small SUV in front of it.

PLAINFIELD TOWNSHIP, Mich. - A 14 year old is dead after a rear-end crash on U.S. 131.

Crews were called to the highway at West River Drive for a crash involving three vehicles around 7 p.m., Wednesday, Aug. 15.

A preliminary investigation revealed a northbound vehicle rear ended a van, pushing it into a small SUV in front of it. The van then left the road and crashed into a large highway sign.

A 14-year-old passenger in the van was pronounced dead at the scene. Five others, from all vehicles, were taken to local hospitals with non-life threatening injuries.

That section of U.S. 131 runs parallel to the Grand River. The crash was near the Grand River Rowing Association boat house. Crews on the water say they heard the sound of the impact.

"It was one of the loudest things I've ever heard," said rowing coach Steve Lasater. "A student and I were out in our single skulls. Just south of Fifth Third Ballpark we heard a loud bang. A very loud bang. Within a few minutes we heard 3 or 4 different sirens from different directions."

All lanes of the U.S. 131 were cleared just before 11 p.m.

The crash remains under investigation.
