5 things to know Friday, September 21, 2018

Here are the 5 things you need to know today.

Each morning 13 ON YOUR SIDE does the work for you and gathers the top five stories from overnight. Here’s what people are talking about this morning:

CONSTRUCTION HEADACHE: Governor Rick Snyder may call in the National Guard to finish construction projects across the state amid a labor dispute. A Snyder spokesman told the Detroit News it was a possibility, to ease traffic headaches. There is an ongoing feud between the union representing state road builders and an association for industry contractors.

COOL DOWN: After a brief morning shower, today will be partly cloudy and windy with falling temperatures. Highs will be in the low to mid 70s, dropping into the 50s during the evening.

HIGH WAVES: The Lake Express Ferry has canceled at least one round trip between Milwaukee and Muskegon due to high waves and wind. 13 On Your Side has reached out to the Lake Express to find out which runs have been canceled and if any are still running today.

SAILOR SALUTE: Mona Shores High School will hold their annual Sailor Salute during tonight's varsity football game against Kenowa Hills. The community is invited to honor military members, police and fire, along with emergency responders. Gates open at 4:30 p.m. Kickoff is at 7.

COMMUNITY CONNECTION: An anonymous survey regarding the Grand Rapids Police Department shows a drop in trust among the community. Their numbers increased from June to July, before dipping by 3 percent overall in August. Chief David Rahinsky attributes the slight drop to a handcuffing incident involving a 17-year-old and twin 11-year-olds.
