An Alto man involved in an early January crash that killed a 66-year-old woman is facing two felony charges stemming from the deadly wreck near Ada, including one for having marijuana in his system.

Cody Lawrence Willett, 21, is charged with reckless driving causing death and operating under the influence causing death. Both are 15-year felonies.

Willett this week waived a probable cause hearing on the charges, sending the case to Kent County Circuit Court. He is free on bond.

Defense attorney Andrew Rodenhouse said his client had a “tiny amount’’ of marijuana in his system, which led to the charge of operating while intoxicated.

“He had the lowest amount possible to test – one nomogram,’’ Rodenhouse said. “That led to the charge.’’

Willett has a clean driving record other than a 2015 ticket for speeding in Grand Rapids.

Investigators say he was involved in a collision on Cascade Road at Spaulding Avenue SE about 3 p.m. on Jan. 2. His pick-up truck crashed into two vehicles stopped for a red light. After hitting the first two cars, Willett’s truck collided with a third vehicle driven by Wilma DeBruin. The Grand Rapids woman died from her injuries.

DeBruin worked at Thornapple Elementary School and was an active member of Calvary Church, according to her obituary.
