10 Years Strong | Longtime ArtPrize employee reflects on the past, predicts the future

Kevin Buist has seen it all. He's been with ArtPrize for ten years now, most recently rising to the ranks of Artistic Director.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - 2018 is a special year for ArtPrize. This is ArtPrize 10. That means ten years of creativity, meaningful thought and conversation, tourism and revitalization in Michigan's second largest city.

Kevin Buist has been there for all of it. He's been with ArtPrize since its inception. In June, he got a promotion, going from Director of Exhibitions to Artistic Director. So needless to say, when it comes to the future of ArtPrize, Buist's vision matters.

It's very timely that we got the chance to talk to him during this year's kickoff to ArtPrize because it's a time of change for the festival. From now on, ArtPrize will happen every other year. The off years will be a break from competition, being replaced with a series of projects beginning with Project 1 in 2019.

Project 1 will still be a huge contemporary art exhibit in downtown Grand Rapids during the fall. But it differs from ArtPrize in other ways. It'll be longer at about two months. A smaller number of artists will be doing larger scale projects.
