Man found dead inside burned Battle Creek home

Authorities are investigating the death of a man found at the scene of a house fire as a possible homicide.

UPDATE: Battle Creek Police identify the man found at 58-year-old Howard Leon Gillette. The fire was at his home. Gillette was found with gunshot wounds. Accelerant was also found. 

There are no suspects as of Wednesday, January 3.


The body of a man was located at a house fire in Battle Creek early Tuesday morning.

Emergency responders were called to a fire at a house on Graves Street, south of Parkway Drive, around 12:45 a.m., Jan. 1. 

After crews put out the fire, the Battle Creek Police Department says they located the man's body. Now, investigators are treating the case as a possible homicide. 

Officers do not plan on releasing any more information on the victim until family members are notified.
