A woman was struck and killed by a train Thursday afternoon.

Battle Creek police were called about 2:15 p.m. to Canadian National Railroad tracks on East Fountain Street near Graphic Packaging at 79 E. Fountain St.

Officers said it appears the woman was crossing two sets of tracks and was struck by a westbound freight train which included an engine and four freight cars on the southern most set of tracks.

She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said the engineer told them he was traveling between 10 and 15 miles per hour and was blowing the train's horn and ringing the bell before the woman was struck.

Officers said they did not find that the woman was wearing any earphones or ear buds.

The scene is an area which is a dead end on both sides of the tracks but people frequently walk across the tracks despite signs prohibiting crossings.

Police did not immediately identify the woman although they said they believe she is from Battle Creek.

The investigation is continuing.
