The driver blamed for a multi vehicle chain-reaction crash in Grand Rapids Thursday afternoon was trying to get away from the police.

Investigators say the 30-year-old man was a hit and run driver involved in a crash on US-131 near Franklin St. SW.  There were reports he was seen drinking in the car and was intoxicated.  He sped away from officers trying to arrest him. The crash that finally stopped him at Buchanan Avenue and Burton St. SW involved 4 or 5 other vehicles.

“All of a sudden I hear the squeals of the tires,” says witness Michael Perez, who works nearby.  "I look, and I see the cars all hitting each other.  It was kind of like a chain reaction type of thing.”

4 people, including the suspected hit and run drunk driver, were hurt in the crash at Burton and Buchanan. Police say the suspected drunk driver's injuries were the most serious.
