Smuggler's Cove closed indefinitely after fire

The blaze was first reported at 7:41 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 14.

BROOKS TOWNSHIP, Mich. - Four different fire departments were called in to help battle the flames at a popular Newaygo County restaurant on Hess Lake Tuesday night.

According to dispatch, Newaygo, Grant, Croton and White Cloud's fire departments responded to Smuggler's Cove. The fire was "under control" by 9 p.m. -- but Newaygo's department remained on scene for several more hours.

The blaze was first reported at 7:41 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 14.

Wednesday morning, some regular customers arrived to find the restaurant closed.

"Hope they can rebuild it," said Russ Tramper.

"We come here from Grand Rapids and love the scenery and food," added Gary Durger.

Owner Martin Tramper said during the summer, the restaurant employed 20 workers.

He believes some kind of electrical issue on the second floor started the fire.

From the outside the building still looks sound. Tramper said inside there's significant damage from the flames, smoke and water.

Tramper said at one time the building was a 10-story hotel. The building is believed to be 140 years old.

Tramper said he needs to meet with his insurance agent before determining what will happen next.
