GRAND HAVEN, Mich. - For nearly 70-years one of the most unique restaurants in all of West Michigan was the Bil-Mar on Grand Haven's beach just feet from Lake Michigan.

The restaurant is gone, and a new restaurant is taking the Bil-Mar's place.Tom Noto purchased the building in 2017, and originally intended to make renovations.

"Took us almost three months to take it apart," said Tom Noto.

Plans changed after determining the structure wasn't sound.

"We just didn't know that it was a tear down." It meant delaying the opening of Noto's at the Bil-Mar.

Because the former building was so close to the lake permits requited Noto to build on the same footprint.

"From what we understand this is the only privately owned commercial real estate on the beach," said Noto. "Chicago to Mackinaw lots of places have a view, but are not on the exact shoreline."

The two-story restaurant includes 150-seats indoors and around 100-seats on the patio.

The second story will host special events like wedding receptions and corporate parties.

And Noto says the design of the dining room and table placement will provide every guest with views of Lake Michigan and the Grand Haven pier.

Noto's at the Bil-Mar will be open year-round. It's expected to open in January.
