3 rescued after Kayaks tip over near dam

The water is shallow enough for people to stand up in that area of the river but Kelly says there are hidden dangers for inexperienced navigators, especially while trying to kayak over the dam.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Grand Rapids Fire rescue crews say two women were taken to the hospital as a precaution after their kayak flipped over in the Grand River.

The two women were paddling when they became caught up in the Coffer Dam below Bridge Street. That is when the kayak started rolling in the undercurrent.

Battalion Chief Colin Kelly says, "The two females were in a good bit of distress when they were getting turned over in the coffer dam."

A man in a separate kayak attempted to help them when his kayak also flipped over. "So now we have three victims getting tossed around in the coffer dam," Kelly said. "They were holding onto the boat and the kayak finally got spit out of the coffer dam and they were about 30 feet below the coffer dam when our boat picked them up."
