Grand Rapids woman still waiting for wheelchair ramp at apartment complex

Sheryl Leatherman on the first floor, but she still has to maneuver three steps to get to the parking lot.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - A Grand Rapids area woman says her apartment complex agreed to build a wheelchair ramp two months ago, but it still isn't done. She asked 13 ON YOUR SIDE for help because she can't seem to get answers on her own.

Sheryl Leatherman says getting in and out of her apartment at Autumn Ridge is difficult. Although she's on the first floor, she still has to maneuver three steps to get to the parking lot.

"I've fallen once, fortunately someone was around to help me up," she said.

Because of her multiple sclerosis, Sheryl needs a walker and scooter to get around. She moved to Autumn Ridge in July and said the complex agreed to accommodate her needs. Sheryl also said she would pay for it. "It was something that I needed. So, I guess I will bear the cost."

Sheryl said the complex needed a letter from her doctor. So, on July 24, her doctor sent the letter.

“They got it a week after I moved in and I've been waiting since then. Every time I contact them, they're like, we're waiting for an estimate, we're waiting," said Sheryl.

As Sheryl waits for the work to get done, she says she hopes it's soon. The weather is turning cold and soon there will be snow. "I'm not getting anywhere with them so it's frustrating and I don't know what else to do."

Autumn Ridge is owned by First Pacific Group. They sent us this statement:

“We have previously approved her request and are working diligently with her to help find a contractor for the work she has requested, but this is at the financial responsibility of the resident, per Federal Fair Housing Laws. We have been in constant communication with Ms. Leatherman to help facilitate this process and are happy to coordinate with her to get prompt resolution.” Linsay Ringle, Area Manager, First Pacific Group.
