GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — This weekend, restaurants around Grand Rapids are celebrating Cinco de Mayo. But Tacos El Cuñado Bridge St. is using their party to also fight lead poisoning in the city.
The Fiesta en el Patio is being held at the West Side restaurant on Saturday and Sunday. They are celebrating Cinco de Mayo with tacos, beer from City Built Brewing and music.
Tacos El Cuñado Bridge St. will be donating 15% of their sales to the Healthy Homes Coalition, a Grand Rapids organization that combats lead poisoning in area children.
"Kids are hurting—let's do something about it while celebrating Cinco de Mayo," said restaurant owner and organizer Humberto Alvarez.
The Healthy Homes Coalition says that about 90% of all childhood lead poisoning cases in Kent County are the result of deteriorating lead-based paint and lead dust found in the home. They help local families and landlords address health hazards in the home, like lead-based paint.
