Jenison man arrested for breaking into cars

The sheriff's office is warning residents not to leave any valuables in your car, make sure your windows are rolled up and your car and garage doors are locked.

JENISON, Mich. - Deputies have arrested a 21-year-old man accused of stealing property from cars.

His identity won't be released until he's arraigned, but deputies said after getting a tip from a neighbor, they found the man wandering around the area of 20th Avenue and Baldwin Street at 3:30 a.m. on Tuesday.

"He's from that same general area, but he was in possession of items that clearly had come from vehicles around the area," Capt. Mark Bennett with the Ottawa County Sheriff's Office said. "Credit cards, such as gift cards and the like, were taken from area vehicles—at least two separate vehicles that we know of right now."

There's been an increase in reports of larceny from garages and cars within the last few weeks.

"Is this individual responsible for other larcenies earlier, maybe several days or weeks earlier? Quite possibly and that's what we're working on right now," Bennett said.

This kind of crime isn't uncommon in the warmer months.

"Seldom do you actually see a breaking-in, meaning a smashing of a window. It's typically walk up and down, try car doors, if it's locked, go to the next," Bennett said.
