Ottawa County deputies have arrested an Ohio man who they say took off during a traffic stop before crossing the Kent County line and crashing a stolen Ford Excursion.

It happened around 11:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 27. Investigators say the man was being pulled over for an equipment violation near the corner of Chicago Drive and Main Street in Jenison, and as the deputy approached, the man drove away.

The deptuty chased the suspect for about 30 seconds before making the decision to end the pursuit. That's when he saw the driver lose control of the vehicle, which rolled into a parking lot on Chicago Drive between Wilson and Division in Grandville. The vehicle clipped a building, sign and flower beds.

The suspect, who is 24 years old, was taken to a local hospital to be checked out but he is expected to be okay. He is facing charges for fleeing and eluding, resisting arrest, operating while intoxicated, and being in possession of a stolen vehicle.

The SUV was reported stolen out of Ohio.
