Holland City Council takes steps to find illegal AirBnBs

The City of Holland is taking the next step in making quality AirBNBs available to tourists.

HOLLAND, Mich. -- City council members are scheduled to vote Wednesday, July 11 on hiring a company to weed out illegal short-term rental home operations.

The city began a two-year pilot program in May. It allows home owners to use their properties for these short-term rentals, even when they're not staying in the homes with the people renting them.

Illegal AirBnBs have been popping up across the country causing problems for tourists and potential fines for homeowners. To be compliant, the property must meet certain requirements stipulated by the city.

Holland leaders want to make sure they have the staff to properly inspect properties and enforce action on those that violate the rules. The city is considering hiring a company that would monitor up to 100 websites where people can advertise short-term rentals, including AirBnB.

That company would then provide a list of those properties, including photos owners' names and more, to Holland's enforcement officers. The proposal is aimed at protecting tourists from potential problems with their rentals. It will also protect the integrity of this pilot program.

The council meeting starts at 7 p.m. at Holland's City Hall.
