The City of Zeeland might vote to get rid of their police department.

Zeeland community leaders could casts votes on Monday, Dec. 4, to decide whether the police department is necessary.

City officials began rethinking police service earlier this year -- after longtime police chief, Bill Olney, announced his retirement.

Community leaders formed a committee to look into outsourcing police services to Ottawa County Sheriff's Department, or merging the police and fire department into one public safety department.

The committee has recommended that the city should keep a separate police department. If the city council goes along with that plan, Zeeland will need to begin looking for a new police chief.

Monday's meeting begins at 7 p.m. at Zeeland City Hall.
