Crews cleaning up sewer overflow in Kalamazoo

UPDATE: The sanitary sewer overflow has been fixed, the Kalamazoo Department of Public Services said. Remediation efforts were finished around 1:30 a.m. on Sunday.

The amount of material discharged is estimated to be about 6,300 gallons. Cleanup efforts are continuing, but flow conditions have been restored.

Officials are advising residents to avoid contact with the Kalamazoo River near the area of the overflow.

KALAMAZOO, Mich. - The City of Kalamazoo Department of Public Services are addressing a sewer overflow from a manhole at 241 Parcom Street in Comstock Township.

Crews are removing a blockage, and they are advising residents to avoid contact with the Kalamazoo River in the area of the overflow. The city also recommends that residents avoid the area near the manhole.

Water Reclamation Plant personnel notified the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality and the Kalamazoo County Environmental Health and Community Services of the spill.
