KALAMAZOO, Mich. - A Kalamazoo woman's apartment suffered substantial damage after her kitchen caught fire Saturday morning.

According to the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety, the incident happened around 6:10 a.m. Dec 8 at an apartment on Inverness Lane.

When crews arrived on scene, the entire first floor of the apartment was on fire. Everyone living in the apartment was evacuated, and officers worked on getting residents of the adjoining apartments out,

The homeowner told officers that she was frying fish on the stove and briefly went upstairs. While she was away from the stove, her smoke detectors started to go off. She went back downstairs to find heavy smoke and her kitchen completely engulfed in flames.

She was able to get out safely, but her apartment suffered substantial damage. The adjoining apartments were fine and other residents were uninjured.

Following this incident, the department of public safety wants to remind everyone the importance of having working smoke detectors on each level of a home -- as well as having a working fire extinguisher.
